The Circus that is FERC

Fercus-CircusIf you have been involved in fighting a pipeline, then you know how frustrating dealing with the FERC process can be.   You know trying to file comments on the FERC website, searching for information, or just trying to find help is difficult, if not impossible.

Many have concluded FERC is a Circus, owned and controlled by the very corporations FERC is suppose to regulate, and they would be correct.

FERC is a biased agency that doesn’t just favor the pipeline companies over the public, but actively works to help advance pipelines, including by stripping the public of our legal rights to challenge projects in the courts.

Efforts by true local grassroots groups, larger formal organizations and individuals like you are making a difference.

FERC is taking note.

Former FERC Commissioner Cheryl Lafleur expressed concerns about critics, stating there is unprecedented opposition and that FERC has a situation with real people taking part in the permitting process.

According to a survey prepared by Black & Veatch Insights Group and sent to Natural Gas corporations, entitled 2015 Strategic Directions – US Natural Gas Industry Report, 74% of the respondent cited DELAYS by OPPOSITION GROUPS as the most significant barrier to construction of pipelines.

More recently, Commissioner Clark explained that such projects are now facing more general “just say no” opposition from interest groups intending to block or delay certain categories of new energy infrastructure (such as all new natural gas pipelines). This new kind of opposition has the potential to create additional delays in the permitting of needed infrastructure, he suggested.

Imagine that – everyday citizens participating in a government process is a “situation”.

We’ve made them sit up and take notice, but we can do better.

A Government Accountability Office Review of FERC could help to shine the light of day on the abuses of FERC and thereby compliment all the work we do.

We need your help to achieve this.

1) We need senators on the proper committee to ask GAO to do the review.  Senators Sanders and Warren are on that committee.  Please considering signing the attached letter to the senators to ask them to make this request.

2) We are likely to need broad public support for the ask in order to get senators sanders and warren to take the step of asking the GAO for this review.  Here is a link to a petition where we hope to get thousands of signatures from all the individuals and organizations who see FERC and the infrastructure projects they are advancing as a major threat that needs to be stopped.
Please help to circulate this petition—>

3)  We need to pull together the dossier of abuses that we will submit to GAO once a review is going, and that we can use to inform the press of the many abuses happening at FERC to get them to print the stories necessary to push the politics in our direction which will also help us secure a solid GAO review.   What kinds of abuses?  See the areas of focus in the attached letter, feel free to let us know what we missed in case we want to expand our ask in future letters.

And yes, this is YOUR circus and these are YOUR clowns and it’s time hold FERC accountable.
